Founding of our Council
The Father Robert E. Nudd Council of the Knights of Columbus was founded
June 28, 1979, under the leadership of Charter Chaplain Fr. Ed and Charter
Grand Knight James Danoy.
We are named after the late Father Robert E. Nudd, the founding pastor of St.
Timothy Parish. We honor our namesake every year by attending the 12:30 p.m.
Mass on the second Sunday in August. The Mass is followed by a prayer service
at the grave of Father Nudd at nearby Fairfax Memorial Park.
Our current membership is around 250 brothers and their families. Every year we
add about 10 new members are looking for a family-oriented faith-based group
that is committed to service. We live in a transient area of northern Virginia, so
a significant percentage of our members also are transfers from other councils.
When our members move out of the area, we encourage those brothers to
transfer to their local council.
Fourth Degree members of our Council belong to the Acts of the Apostles Assembly, #2411 which meets monthly in the St. Timothy
School cafeteria.
What We Do
The No. 1 mission of the Knights of Columbus is charity. We adhere to that
directive by collecting donations each April for the intellectually disabled for
a statewide charity called KOVAR (http://kovarva.org), by supporting youth
programs and holding an annual free Thanksgiving dinner that’s open to all senior
citizens in the surrounding community. The Thanksgiving dinner is cosponsored
with our brother knights from nearby St. Andrews parish.
We also are a fraternal organization that provides a social outlet for the families
of St. Timothy parish. We host parish breakfasts four times a year and also offer
free coffee and donuts after Sunday Masses several times a year. Our family
dinners are held on Saturday evenings after the 5:30 Mass under various themes
such as Italian Night, Irish Night, Oktoberfest and Taco Night. In April 2010 we
cosponsored a very successful Korean Night with our brother knights from St.
Paul Chung parish. During Lent, we cook meatless dinners on Friday evenings
prior to the Stations of the Cross.
Our youth program is highlighted by our sponsorship of Boy Scout Troop 7369,
founded in January 2010 by Past Grand Knight C.J. Staton. We also hold an
annual basketball free-throw contest in late January or early February. We
support parish youth programs by cooking at the Vacation Bible School picnic
every July and cooking at the annual Altar Server picnic. We provide keepsake
Bibles to high school seniors who have participated in the parish youth group
or the CCD religious education program. And we hold an annual toy drive for a
needy parish in West Virginia.
Our church programs include Keep Christ in Christmas card sales and a
crèche that we erect in the church courtyard during Advent. For 2010-2011 we
are participating in a statewide program to encourage residents of Virginia to
collectively say the rosary 1 million times.
Our pro-life activities include participation in the March for Life every January.
Our biggest fundraiser is the sale of Christmas trees during a three to four week
period beginning the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Another very successful
fundraiser is the sale of Brunswick stew outside the church on Superbowl Sunday.
The highlight of our private social events is our annual Christmas party for knights
and their families at which Santa Claus sometimes makes an appearance,
weather permitting.
Our Council has always maintained a very active service program. We have
had the honor of being named a Star Council on numerous occasions. We
were named a Circle of Honor Council in 1995 and 1996, and it received
special notability as the Number 1 Council in the Commonwealth of Virginia
for the fraternal years 1996-1997, 1997-1998. We also received the Knights
of Columbus International Youth Award in 1994 for The Fr. Ed Toy Drive.
A more detailed description of all of our events and activities, as well as
a schedule of our regular meetings, can be found in our online calendar.
